Regan Named Empire 8 Woman of the Year
Senior Amy Regan of the Stevens Institute of Technology cross country and track and field teams has been named the 2016-17 Empire 8 Athletic Conference Woman of the Year. This award honors a senior female student-athlete who has distinguished herself throughout her collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership.
Regan, who was also named the 2016-17 Empire 8 Female Senior Scholar-Athlete Award winner, is the fourth student-athlete from Stevens chosen as the Conference's Woman of the Year.
Regan closed out her career as one of the most decorated runners in Division III, Stevens program history and E8 history. The Green Brook, New Jersey native captured six national championships, winning two in cross country and four on the track. A 14-time All-American, Regan helped Stevens reach its first-ever cross country national championship, was named Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on four occasions, and is a two-time Division III Honda Cross Country Athlete of the Year.
"Athletics has empowered me to create and follow my dreams through building confidence and self-esteem from a young age, " said Regan. "The commitment to training and competition instills a feeling of strength and accomplishment which carries over beyond sports, but into academics and the professional world."
In addition to her national accolades, Regan has been a force in Empire 8 Conference competition, earning four Cross Country Athlete of the Year honors, three Indoor Track Athlete of the Year awards and one Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year honor.
In the classroom, Regan has taken both undergraduate and graduate courses simultaneously in the Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Engineering from School of Systems and Enterprises. She carried a 3.83 grade-point average in Engineering Management (undergrad) and a 3.75 gpa in Systems Analytics (master).
"I am proud to be the second Stevens student to graduate with a Masters Degree in Systems Analytics, a program developed while attending Stevens. Systems Analytics is changing the way decisions are being made, leveraging and applying knowledge in innovative ways," said Regan.
Regan has been named to the Empire 8 President’s List four times, has multiple Stevens President’s and Dean’s List honors, is a two-time CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-American and two-time Scholar Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA.
When not competing or attending class, Regan committed countless hours to projects and organizations both on the Stevens campus and within the city of Hoboken. She has been a volunteer at the Hoboken Soup Kitchen, taken part in the PB&J event for the homeless, helped with the Weehawken Elementary Track and Field Day and volunteered for the yearly Stevens Duckling Program where she led Hoboken students through Varsity Weight Room Activities and was a classroom leader for STEM projects.
Regan will now be forwarded to the national NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee. The Empire 8 will also nominate Ithaca College track and field standout Brandy Smith.
Conferences may recognize two nominees if at least one is an ethnic minority or an international student. Regan and Smith join an elite group of student-athletes from across NCAA Division I, II and III nominated for the award.
The committee will choose the top ten nominees in each division (I, II and III). From among those 30 honorees, the selection committee will determine the top three in each division. From those nine, the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year will be chosen.
Regan and Smith were two of six outstanding nominees considered by the Empire 8 Woman of the Year Committee. The other four candidates were:
Amanda Off, Alfred University
Mikalean Cucciarre-Stuligross, Hartwick College
Jennifer Zacchigna, Houghton College
Gabrielle Schnepp, Utica College
