Berry was named Most Valuable Player of the Empire 8 Women’s Basketball Championship after leading third-seeded Utica to its second conference title in three years. She scored 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the Pioneers’ 64-59 victory over Stevens in the semifinals, hitting seven of 16 field goals and 12 of 13 free throws. Berry scored as time expired to give Utica a 38-37 win over top-seeded Ithaca in the championship game and finished the game with 11 rebounds. Earlier in the week, Berry was named Empire 8 Women’s Basketball Player of the Year.
Fiore averaged 14 points and six rebounds in three games for Utica. She tallied a season-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds in an 89-61 Pioneers’ victory at Hartwick on Tuesday.
Ithaca and Empire 8 champion Utica each received bids to the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship. The Bombers (22-5) will host first- and second-round play, opening with DeSales (18-9) on Friday. The other matchup at Ithaca will pit Mt. St. Mary (22-5) against Williams (18-7). The winners will meet in the second round on Saturday. The Pioneers (21-6) will travel to Moravian (25-2) to face the host school with Farmingdale State (25-1) meeting Gettysburg (22-4) at the same site. The winners will meet Saturday in the second round.
