Ithaca Chases Sixth Empire 8 Women's Outdoor Track and Field Title

ROCHESTER, NY – Ithaca College is seeking its third consecutive conference title and sixth in the seven-year history of the sport in the conference at the Empire 8 Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship Saturday at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Junior Marcia McCord has won four Track Athlete of the Year awards, including the honor in each of her first two outdoor seasons.  She qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in three events this season and won four individual events at the state meet.  McCord won the 200- and 400-meter dashes in last year’s outdoor meet and set an Empire 8 Championship record with a long jump of 5.55 meters.

Sophomore Emma Dewart of the Bombers earned her second Empire 8 Indoor Field Athlete of the Year earlier this season and was named Field Athlete of the Year after the 2009 outdoor season.  She finished second in the pentathlon and third in the high jump at the NCAA indoor championship, and broke a 27-year-old school record with 3,508 points in the pentathlon at the NYSCTC Championships.  Dewart won the high jump in last year’s conference meet and finished second in the 100-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Jessica Hoeffner of Ithaca earned Field Athlete of the Year honors at last year’s outdoor championship and was named 2009 Empire 8 Outdoor Track and Field Rookie of the Year.  Jenn Randall earned conference titles in the mile and as part of the distance medley relay in the indoor championship and was named Empire 8 Rookie of the Year after the indoor season.  She earned Runner of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the fall’s cross country conference championship.

Senior Jamie Morey of RIT was named Field Athlete of the Year in the 2008 outdoor conference championship.  She is a two-time discus champion at the conference outdoor meet and has captured the hammer throw in each of the past two outdoor championships.

Junior Kristi Custer of Nazareth College won the triple jump in last year’s outdoor championship and finished second in the event at this year’s indoor meet.

Three Stevens Institute of Technology student-athletes set school records in the recent Delaware Open.  Jamie Brabson set the mark in the steeplechase, Jenny Wehof did so in the 100-meter hurdles, and Salme Cook toppled her own record in the 800-meter run.

Senior Megan Crimmins of Alfred University captured the 1,500 meters at last year’s outdoor championship.

Utica College will be competing in the outdoor championship for the first time.  Junior Lauren Penc won the 200- and 400-meter dashes at the University of Rochester in the Pioneers’ last competition.
