Empire 8 Announces 2009 Field Hockey All-Conference Team; Kara Borzillo of Stevens Named Empire 8 Field Hockey Player of the Year

ROCHESTER, NY – The Empire 8 announced its 2009 Field Hockey All-Conference team with senior Kara Borzillo of repeat conference champion Stevens Institute of Technology being named Empire 8 Player of the Year.
Borzillo, who earned first-team all-conference honors at forward each of the past two seasons, moved to center midfielder this season. She shares the team lead with 10 goals and ranks second with 22 points entering NCAA play.
Senior defender Erin Broderick and junior goalkeeper Ellyn Griggs of the Ducks were also named to the all-conference first team. Broderick was named Most Valuable Player of the Empire 8 Field Hockey Championship, while Griggs enters NCAA play with a 17-3 record and a 0.85 goals against average.
Three Hartwick College players were selected to the all-conference first team, including junior Amanda Burton and senior Jennifer Murphy, each a repeat first-team selection. Junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Chapman, who has recorded 10 wins and a 1.21 goals against average entering the ECAC tournament, was also named to the all-conference first team.
Kelsey Kimble of the Hawks was named Empire 8 Rookie of the Year and leads the team with eight goals and 20 points.
Juniors Kolbey Seidel and Julianne Zackey of runner-up Washington & Jefferson College were each chosen as first-team all-conference selections. Zackey, a repeat first-team choice, led the team with 19 points. Seidel, who was named to the second team a year ago, finished with eight assists and 10 points.
Senior Shannon Moats and sophomore Avion Ashton of Utica College were named first-team all-conference players. Moats was an honorable mention selection as a junior.
Junior Katie Brown, who led Ithaca College with five goals and 16 points, garnered first-team all-conference recognition.
Senior Kelly Flanagan of Nazareth College was named to the all-conference team for the third time with her first selection to the first team. She led the team in scoring for the fourth consecutive season and led all players in goals and points per game in conference play.
Hartwick Head Coach Anna Meyer was chosen as Empire 8 Field Hockey Coach of the Year for leading the Hawks to a 5-1 conference record, 11 overall wins, and a bid to the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Field Hockey Championship.
