Empire 8 Announces 2008 Field Hockey All-Conference Team

ROCHESTER, NY – The Empire 8 announced its 2008 Field Hockey All-Conference team. Senior midfielder Allison Shields of conference champion Stevens Institute of Technology was named Player of the Year while earning first-team all-conference recognition. Shields, the Most Valuable Player of the Empire 8 Field Hockey Championship, controls the game for the Ducks and has scored six goals and totaled 19 points entering NCAA play.
First-year forward Rebecca Corsones of Utica College, who is second on the team in goals, points, and game-winning goals, was named Empire 8 Rookie of the Year.
Senior forward Hillary Paul and junior forward Kara Borzillo of Stevens were repeat first-team selections. Paul, who earned the first-team honor for the third consecutive year, is second on the Ducks with 12 goals and 31 points. Borzillo leads all Empire 8 players with 19 goals and 48 points.
Two players from runner-up Washington & Jefferson College were named to the first team, including senior forward Laura Peery, a second-team choice last year. Peery leads the ECAC-bound Presidents with 10 goals and 25 points. Sophomore forward Julianne Zackey, second on the team with eight goals and 20 points, garnered first-team recognition for the first time.
Junior Jennifer Murphy and sophomore Amanda Barton of Hartwick College were selected to the first-team all-conference team for the first time. Each player is a strong all-around player and tied for second on the team in total points.
Senior midfielder Marisa Frank of Ithaca College repeated as a first-time selection and was joined on the first team by the Bombers’ leading scorer, senior forward Elyse Green, who finished with eight goals and 20 points.
Senior forward Katie Kutas of Utica College, the 2006 Empire 8 Field Hockey Player of the Year, was named to the all-conference first team for the third time in her career. She led the Pioneers with 11 goals and 23 points.
Senior midfielder Julia Paska of Nazareth College, a second-team all-conference performer a year ago, was named to the first team this season. She ranked second on the team with six goals and 13 points.
Junior Jalene McCulloch of Elmira College was chosen as the first-team all-conference goalkeeper. She leads all of Division III with 19.63 saves per game.
Stevens head coach Jessica Reed was chosen as Empire 8 Field Hockey Coach of the Year for leading the Ducks to their first conference title and NCAA appearance.
