Empire 8 Men's Swimmers and Divers to Compete in NCAA Championship
March 17, 2008
Empire 8 swimmers and divers will compete at the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship at Miami University of Ohio Thursday through Saturday.
Junior Matt Baker of Empire 8 champion Alfred University is competing in the national meet for the second consecutive year. He placed 14th a year ago to earn honorable mention All-America honors in the 100-yard backstroke. He is seeded 13th in the event this year and will also swim in the 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard backstroke.
Freshman Evan Wilson became the first member of the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s team to qualify for nationals. The Empire 8 Championship co-Rookie of the Meet, Wilson will swim in the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle events and the 400-yard IM. He met the provisional qualifying mark in the 1,650 freestyle twice this season.
Two Rochester Institute of Technology divers will compete in this year’s national championship. Quinn Donahoe, who repeated as Empire 8 Diver of the Meet at the conference championship, and Matt Joseph both qualified in the 22-diver one- and three-meter events. Donahoe qualified for the fourth consecutive year and looks to add to his All-American honors on the one-meter board (2006 and 2007) and three-meter board (2005 and 2007). His highest finish was fifth in the one-meter board last year. Joseph earned honorable mention All-America honors last season with his 14th-place finish in the three-meter dive.
