Alfred Wins Second Consecutive Empire 8 Men's Swimming and Diving Championship March 1, 2008
Day 3 Summary Alfred University won its second consecutive Empire 8 Men's Swimming and Diving Championship, finishing 124 points ahead of runner-up Ithaca College. The Saxons won six individual events in the championship and finished first in all five relay events. Junior Brian Agro (200-yard breaststroke in 2:11.59) won his third event of the meet and classmate Matt Baker (200-yard backstroke in 1:55.39) captured his second conference title of the weekend for the Saxons. Alfred completed its sweep of the relay events by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:08.88. Sophomore Jeff Kaemmerlen of Rochester Institute of Technology earned his second Empire 8 title of the weekend when he won the 100-yard freestyle in 46.68 seconds. Senior teammate Matt Joseph won the three-meter dive with a score of 490.35. Freshmen Evan Wilson and Thomas Takahashi of Stevens Institute of Technology each recorded first-place finishes. Wilson won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 16:13.55 and Takahashi won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.24. Day 2 Summary Bolstered by two more relay wins, another win by junior Brian Agro, and a first-place finish from junior Matt Baker, Alfred University extended its lead entering the final day of the 2008 Empire 8 Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. Agro captured the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.68 seconds and Baker won the 100-yard backstroke in 51.74 seconds. The Saxons finished first in the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay. Juniors Kevin Milkovich and Steve VanDuzer of Hartwick College garnered individual victories. Milkovich won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:09.02 and VanDuzer took the 100-yard butterfly in 52.21 seconds. Freshman Joe Gage of Ithaca College won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:42.82. Day 1 Summary Defending conference champion Alfred University used two relay and two individual victories to take a 62-point lead over runner-up Ithaca College after the first day of the 2008 Empire 8 Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. Sophomore Andrew Brisson of Alfred won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:42.67 and junior teammate Brian Agro captured the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.92. The Saxons finished first in the 200-yard freestyle and broke their own Empire 8 Association and Championship records in the 400-yard medley relay with a winning time of 3:28.10. Rochester Institute of Technology also had two individual winners on opening day with sophomore Jeff Kaemmerlen taking the 50-yard freestyle in 21.24 seconds and senior Quinn Donahoe winning the one-meter dive with a score of 453.25. |
