November 12, 2007
From Utica College Sports Information Release
UTICA, NY – Hartwick College (72) and Utica College (70) scored a combined 142 points Saturday in an NCAA Division III football contest and have now etched themselves into the record books as the most prolific scoring effort by two teams in a single game since the NCAA began keeping official records in 1937. Across the board, the combined total broke all previous records at any level of NCAA collegiate football.
The previous record of 141 points, was set by Weber State (73) and Portland State (68) on October 27, 2007, prior to Saturday’s quadruple-overtime contest that featured an astounding 20 touchdowns, 1,042 yards of total offense and 52 first downs.
Utica’s 70 points also broke a national-record for most points scored by a losing team, eclipsing the old record set by Western N.M., who scored 66 points in a double-overtime loss to Fort Lewis on November 2, 2002. Headed into Saturday’s game the Pioneers of Utica College had scored 129 points total in nine previous games, good for an average of just over 14 points per contest.
Hartwick pulled out the victory by stopping Utica on a two-point conversion attempt in the fourth and final quarter.
The Hawks of Hartwick College were led by wide receiver Jack Phelan (Slingerlands, NY/Guilderland) and junior quarterback Jason Boltus (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker). Phelan caught 11 passes for a career-high 240 yards and four touchdowns, including two 25 yard catches in overtime to seal the victory for the Hawks. Boltus completed 22-of-41 passes for 420 yards and six touchdowns on the day, while also running for one touchdown.
The Pioneers offense was guided by a solid rushing attack, complimented nicely by option quarterback Conlon’s (St. Anthony's/East Northport) 13 completions for 216 yards and four touchdowns. Conlon also led the team with 97 rushing yards and one 14-yard touchdown scamper. Freshman Brian Jones (Wilby/Waterbury, CT) carried the ball 15 times for 83 yards and tallied two touchdowns for the second consecutive game. Sophomore receiver Cody Elliot (John F. Kennedy/Sloan) caught six passes for 98 yards, while senior captain James Proniewych (Patchogue-Medford/Medford) caught four passes for 80 yards, including a 60 yard touchdown on the Pioneers first play from scrimmage to give UC a 7-0 lead at 14:51 in the first quarter.
