HOBOKEN, NJ – On Sunday, October 7, the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s lacrosse team will host the 2007 Stevens Fall Classic for Fallen Heroes at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $2 for students with proper identification. All proceeds from the day’s events will go to support the Children of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund.

The first game on October 7 will feature Stevens and Adelphi University at 3:45 p.m. Then, at 5 p.m., Adelphi will play Western New England College. Stevens will finish out the day with a game against Western New England at 7 p.m.

The Ducks closed out the 2007 season with an overall record of 16-4. In the process, Stevens set a new school record for wins in a season and captured its first-ever Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Metro Championship. Western New England finished the year ranked No. 3 in the nation and set a school record with its 17-1 mark. The Golden Bears captured the Pilgrim League title and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. Adelphi, which is a Division II institution that competes in the East Coast Conference, went 5-8 last season.

Founded in October 2003, the Children of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund is a means of providing college grants and financial assistance to surviving children and spouses of U.S. military service members who have lost their lives in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The financial assistance program assists disabled service member families as well. Donations come from families, individuals and businesses throughout the world.

“Our coaching staff wanted to do something to support our troops, and after looking over a number of different options, we felt that we found a great cause to be associated with,” Head Coach Byron Collins (Succasunna, N.J.) said. “Given our involvement in the collegiate setting, we felt that it would be good to give back to children and possibly help them attend college in the future. We really hope to raise a lot of money through our fall tournament and implore all interested parties to offer private donations as well.”

Since 2005, the grant committee has awarded $84,500 in college grants to children and spouses who have lost a parent or spouse during their service in the Iraq or Afghanistan wars and $49,042 in financial assistance to families with children under the age of 18.
