Karen Powell Named Interim Women's Basketball Coach at Hartwick August 16, 2007
ONEONTA, N.Y. – Karen Powell has been named as interim head coach for the Hartwick women’s basketball program, it was announced Thursday afternoon. Powell, who has served two stints as an assistant with the Hawks’ program, most recently the 2006-07 campaign, will take over the duties as head coach for the upcoming 2007-08 season. She replaces Daphne Thompson, who left Hartwick after 15 years to accept the head coaching position at Oneonta State earlier this week. “We would like to do a national search to replace Coach {Daphne}Thompson, but feel the timing may not be right to conduct a quality search,” said Hartwick Athletic Director Debbie Warren. “Coach {Karen} Powell offers us a smooth transition into the upcoming season and is very familiar with both the returning and incoming players in the program. We will conduct a national search following the 2007-08 season. ” Powell, a former four-year standout at Southern Illinois, where she earned her bachelors in 1999, assisted with the Hartwick program from 2002-2004 and then returned for last year’s season. Previously, she spent a year (2004-05) as an assistant at South Dakota Tech, and as head coach at SUNY-IT for the 2005-06 campaign. Hartwick, which posted a 9-13 mark a year ago, will return two starters and eight letterwinners for the coming season. |
