Ithaca Women's Tennis Team Wins First Match May 4, 2007
Brunswick, Maine –The women’s tennis posted a 5-2 win over Simmons in an NCAA regional quarterfinal match Friday at Bowdoin. The Bombers (11-6), who were playing their first NCAA playoff match ever, advance to face the host Polar Bears Saturday at 10 a.m. in the regional semifinal round. Sophomore Alyssa Jaffe (Pascack Hills/Montvale, N.J.) was Ithaca’s only double winner, teaming with senior Erin Chapman (Queensbury/Queensbury) for an 8-4 win at first doubles and posting a straight-set win at third singles. Chapman’s doubles win was the school-record 49th of her career, moving her past Meghan Carroll (2000-04) and Jamie Daniello (1996-99) atop the program’s all-time list. With 93 overall wins in her career, Chapman *trails only Carroll on Ithaca’s career list. Ithaca swept the doubles matches, with sophomore Natalie Jenereski (Knoch/Butler, Pa.) and freshman Stephanie Racine (Sacred Heart/Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) teaming to win 8-5 at second doubles and junior Rachel Gunderson (Maple Grove/Bemus Point) and Devra Reiman (Columbia/Maplewood, N.J.) posting an 8-4 win at the third slot. Freshman Sarah Hollis (Green Farms Academy/Fairfield, Conn.) rounded out Ithaca’s winners, posting a 6-4, 6-2 win at sixth singles. Two singles matches were still being contested when the Bombers clinched the match with their fifth point; Chapman and Gunderson had both won their first set and were leading in the second when their matches were halted. |
