Empire 8 Announces Election of Officers
July 27, 2006
ROCHESTER, NY - The Empire 8 announced that Alfred
University Athletic Director Jim Moretti will serve
as the conference's First Vice-President and Utica College
Athletic Director Jim Spartano was unanimously elected
as the Second Vice-President. Alfred University President
Dr. Charles Edmondson continues to serve as president
of the conference.
Moretti takes over for Bob Ward, the St. John Fisher
Athletic Director who served two-year terms as Second
Vice-President and most recently First Vice-President.
Moretti enters his 10th year as Alfred's athletic director
after a successful 13-year career as head football coach,
where he posted a 70-57-3 mark to place him second all-time
at the school in coaching victories.
Moretti earned his bachelor's degree in business administration
from Alfred in 1972. He quarterbacked the Saxons' football
team, leading them to a 20-4 record while earning Associated
Press honorable mention Little All-American honors twice.
He earned a master's degree in physical education from
Cortland State in 1975.
Spartano has guided Utica coaches and student-athletes
for the past 34 years. He began his career coaching
both baseball and basketball at the school after earning
his bachelors degree at Oneonta State, where he is a
member of the Oneonta Athletics Hall of Fame.
Spartano received both his graduate and masters degree
in athletic administration from Syracuse University.
The 2005-06 academic year was the most successful season
of athletic competition in the school's history under
his leadership. The field hockey team earned its first
NCAA Division III post-season berth and the men's basketball
team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the national tournament.
