Empire 8's Mitrano Appointed to NCAA Sportsmanship Conduct Committee May 20, 2005
The purpose of the committee is to establish policies and educational programs for sportsmanship and ethical conduct in intercollegiate athletics consistent with the educational mission and goals of the member institutions in all divisions and educate, on a continuing basis, all constituencies about the policies in the NCAA Constitution. Mitrano is recognized as a national expert in sportsmanship and ethical conduct. He recently founded and led an initiative to create a Division III Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Committee, which focuses specifically on the issues facing the members of the NCAA's largest division. Mitrano was appointed chair of the committee which is sponsored by the Division III Commissioner's Association. Heading into his fifth year as commissioner of the Empire 8, Mitrano is conducting research on fan conduct and game management policies in Division III in an effort to create a set of best practices for institutions to consider for their use. Mitrano will present that data on June 17th when he speaks at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics annual convention in Orlando, Florida. He also recently presented on sportsmanship policies and programs at the Association of College Administrative Professionals annual convention and has spoke at several functions in recent years. Mitrano is no stranger to working with the CSEC. Since he created the widely acclaimed Conduct Foul Program he has worked closely with the CSEC to bring the program, and other initiatives, to Division's I and II. The Conduct Foul Program has been featured in USA Today, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The NCAA News, and many other publications. In 2004, Mitrano was named a Sports Ethics Fellow by the Institute for International Sport as a result of the many initiatives he created and spearheaded within Empire 8 and the NCAA. Empire 8 is recognized as a leader in sportsmanship programming and policy. Empire 8 member institutions are Alfred University, Elmira College, Hartwick College, Ithaca College, Nazareth College, Rochester Institute of Technology, St. John Fisher College and Utica College.
