Debbie Warren Named Director of Athletics at Hartwick April 5, 2005
Debbie Warren, former athletic director at Chowan College in Murfreesboro, NC and former associate athletics director at the University of Alabama, has been named director of athletics and chair of the physical education department at Hartwick College, effective June 1, 2005. The announcement was made by Greg Krikorian, vice president for student life, who supervises athletics and physical education at Hartwick. Warren will succeed Betty Powell, who has served as acting director of athletics the past two years. Hartwick's national search for a new director of athletics "resulted in many qualified candidates for the position," Krikorian said. "Debbie Warren's experience in coaching and overseeing Division I and III programs was especially appealing to the search committee members since Hartwick competes at both of those intercollegiate levels." Krikorian added, "We also were impressed with her strategic planning and managerial skills. I am confident that she is the right person to take leadership of Hartwick's athletic programs and to provide the outreach to our supporters in the community." Hartwick President Richard P. Miller, Jr. emphasized Warren's "breadth of experience in nearly all areas of college athletics, including developing successful fundraising and external relations programs and in such technical areas as NCAA compliance and affirmative action issues. We are pleased to have attracted a proven leader with such extensive background in athletics management and coaching." "I feel honored that Hartwick has selected me for this important position," Debbie Warren said. "I look forward with energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to the wonderful possibilities and for a successful future for Hartwick and the Hawks." The past two years, Warren has been director of athletics at Chowan College, where she supervised 10 men’s and women's intercollegiate teams at the Division III level. Among her other responsibilities at Chowan were managing the athletic facilities, serving as an adjunct faculty member and as the primary NCAA compliance officer, and building and maintaining effective fundraising programs. She also handled the budgeting for the department and set short-term and long-range planning goals. From 1985-2001, Warren worked as an administrator, serving both the student life and athletic departments at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. In her last position there from 1996-2001, as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator, she administered daily operations for 14 Olympic Sport programs. In addition, she served as the human resource manager for the athletics department and oversaw the strength and conditioning and athletic training programs, the equipment room, and the band and cheerleading programs. She also directed Title IX and Affirmative Action compliance for the department. As assistant director of athletics at the University of Alabama from 1993-96, Warren was director of event management for all Olympic Sports home contests. From 1991-93, she was director of aquatic sports. In that position, she administered a $1-million budget, directed facility operations, developed long-range plans for four facilities, and directed promotions and marketing. She was assistant director of aquatic sports at Alabama from 1985-91. Warren was head coach of the women's swimming and diving and the women's cross country and track and field teams from 1980-85 at her alma mater, Mount Union College in Alliance, OH. She earned a B.S. in education from Mount Union in 1976 and an M.S. in education administration from Youngstown State University in Youngstown, OH. She recently served as a member of the NCAA Division III Football Championships Committee and chaired the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Committee from 1997-2001. She also was a regional tournament director in 2003-04 for the NCAA Gymnastics Championship at Louisiana State University and the NCAA Division I Softball Championship at Baylor University. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * |
