Freshman quarterback Andrew Benkwitt of the Utica College football team was named the ECAC Northwest Football Rookie of the Year. Jared Manzer, a senior wide receiver/free safety on the Alfred University football team, has been named an American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-American. Manzer, who was named by the AFCA as a receiver, recently completed a stellar career at AU, where he broke virtually all the school’s major receiving records. Led by Most Outstanding Player Josh Carter, the Springfield College football team bettered a pair of old school records in defeating Plymouth State University, 42-13, in the ECAC Northeast Championship Bowl on Saturday afternoon at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field. Junior quarterback Tim Bailey completed 24 of 41 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another 70 yards and a score as St. John Fisher College defeated visiting Cortland 34-20 in the ECAC Northwest Bowl. The St. John Fisher College football team jumped out to a 35-0 halftime-lead and cruised to a 56-13 win over host Hartwick College on Saturday in the regular-season finale for both teams. With the win, Fisher improves to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the Empire 8 Conference, giving the Cardinals a share of the Empire 8 title for the fourth time in the last six years. Junior quarterback Brian Grastorf completed 19 of 28 passes for 274 yards and three touchdowns, and also ran for 48 yards and two scores as Ithaca defeated previously undefeated Cortland 35-13 to retain the Cortaca Jug. The game marked the 50th anniversary of the traditional matchup and gives the Bombers a 9-1 record this season. Ithaca College (8-1 overall, 5-1 Empire 8) clinched at least a share of the conference title with a 43-35 road win over Alfred University. The Bombers, ranked third in the NCAA East Regional rankings, would win the title outright with a Saxons' victory over St. John Fisher College next Saturday.
